This week, we’re helping a Texas elementary school teacher get her classroom some new chapter books, and an Alaska high school teacher get the science lab kits her students need. We hope that readers who support quality public school education will help by sharing or supporting our featured projects.
The Inoculation Project is an ongoing, volunteer effort to crowdfund science, math, and literacy projects for public schools in low-income neighborhoods. As always, our conduit is DonorsChoose, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation that facilitates tax-deductible donations to specific, vetted projects in public schools.
For our new project this week, let’s help this elementary teacher in a Texas border town to get more books in the various series her students can’t get enough of!
PROJECT #1
Resources: Help me give my students more chapter books to continue motivating them to keep on reading.
Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households.
Location: Narciso Cavazos Elementary School, Mission, Texas
Total: $290.11
Still Needed: $290.11 Completed, thank you! See you next Sunday!
Project description by Mrs. Villarreal: The specific books I am requesting special are requests from students, books they want to read and don't have access to in our school library. It will make a difference in their learning because they will continue reading which will help them continue building their fluency and comprehension. The goal for this project is to give my students an abundance of books they're already enjoy reading. My students this year are like no other group I've had, they are caring and kind to one another. They help each other throughout the day and give each other suggestions on what to read next. It makes me very proud to be their teacher.

Dan Gutman, author of the popular My Weird School series and its several sequels, tells us a little about all of them, including his new series.
Our second project is quite ambitious, but its deadline is still two months away and we’ve made good progress in the last couple of weeks!
Ms. Boone teaches high-school grades in a small fishing village with a population that’s heavily Alaskan Native. She needs a large assortment of hands-on lab materials for all the science topics she needs to cover.
PROJECT #2
Resources: Help me give my students more materials for exploratory labs in science class!
Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households.
Location: Newhalen School, Iliamna, Alaska
Total: $1,199.74
Still Needed: $623.86 Completed, thank you!! Please consider project #1 above.
Project description by Ms. Boone: These materials meet the standards of the multiple levels of science that I teach, including general science, physical science, and earth science. They will help students by giving them opportunities to participate in hands on, exploratory labs.
With your donation, these materials can provide students in rural Alaska with more place-based and exploratory labs, giving them opportunities that they might not otherwise get in an remote area of Alaska.
Please consider helping my class gain more resources for hands on activities. We can't thank you enough for your support and consideration in donating.
Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference!
One of the items requested is a lab kit called “Modeling Earth Processes: Destructive Forces”. I like this channel, Practical Engineering, where a civil engineer addresses some interesting questions such as famous large-structure failures. In this segment, he explains how sinkholes form, which is one of the topics covered in the lab kit I mentioned.
I’m pleased to say that our project #1 from last week was completed (which was important, because it was running out of time.) Many thanks to our readers for getting it a good part of the way to the finish line!
Project #1, Alphabet Sounds Teaching Tubs!: Mrs. Vines wanted a set of alphabet-sounds tubs to help her Mississippi kindergarteners learn to read.
She writes: Thank you so much for helping to fund my project. My students will be so thrilled to hear the news when I tell them. They will be over the moon with excitement when the sound tubs arrive and they get to help unpack the box. Thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts.
DonorsChoose has developed the designation Equity Focus Schools to describe some schools that submit projects. They meet two criteria: at least 50% of students are Black, Latinx, Native American, Pacific Islander, or multiracial, and at least 50% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, the standard measure for school economic need. You can read more at the link about their efforts to address the longstanding inequity in education. |
Founded in 2009, The Inoculation Project seeks to fund science, math, and literacy projects in public school classrooms and libraries. Our conduit is DonorsChoose, a crowdfunding charity founded in 2000 and highly rated by both Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau.
Every Sunday, we focus on helping to fund projects in neighborhood public schools where the overwhelming majority of students come from low-income households. We welcome everyone who supports public school education — no money is required!
Finally, here’s our list of successfully funded projects — our series total is 1087! The success-list diary also contains links and additional information about DonorsChoose.
