DeLay: To Hell With Tsunami Victims.

Thu Jan 06, 2005 at 01:01:35 PM PDT

During the 109th Congressional Prayer Service on yesterday, there were some sentiments expressed about the recently-passed Bob Matsui and Shirley Chisolm among scripture readings and reminders about the "Christian foundation" of our government.

Then others spoke of the tsunami tragedy, and Rep. Tom DeLay gets up to the pulpit and lets loose with this (below the fold):

A reading of the Gospel, in Matthew 7:21 through 27.

Not every one who says to me, "Lord, Lord," will enter the kingdom of heaven; but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.

Many will say to me on that day, "Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? Did we not drive out demons in your name? Did we not do mighty deeds in your name?"

Then I will declare to them solemnly, "I never knew you: depart from me, you evil doers."

Everyone who listens to these words of mine, and acts on them, will be like a wise man, who built his house on a rock:

The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew, and buffeted the house, but it did not collapse; it has been set solidly on rock.

And everyone who listens to these words of mine, but does not act on them, will be like a fool who built his house on sand:

The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew, and buffeted the house, and it collapsed and was completely ruined.

He says nothing more, and returns to his seat.  But, his meaning is perfectly clear.

Oh Lord, where are Mark Twain and Upton Sinclair when you need them?

. . . is that the passage:  "Many will say to me on that day, "Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? Did we not drive out demons in your name?" plainly applies not to non-Christians (such as myself, who never prophesy or act in Jesus name) but to false Christians--such as Tom Delay!  Of course, they will never, ever get it.  But their only hope of of avoiding damnation is that these words of Jesus are wrong!
  •  Dante... (4.00 / 3)

the eighth circle of hell includes grafters, hypocrites, thieves, evil counselors, false witnesses, and sowers of discord, among others.  Sounds like we know wher ol' Tom's gonna end up.

For the record, it looks like the "sins" of gays aren't quite as bad-- "sodomites" only rate the seventh circle.  Delay, were he inclined to read The Inferno, would undoubtedly claim that Democrats all end up in the ninth circle as traitors, but I doubt he'd manage to get through it.

        •  wake up dante, we need one more ring (none / 0)

given that many antics of the medici family rival the best of representative tom deLusional, i'd love to situate the bug killer within dante's extant framework, but can never really settle on one ring as the best.  truth of the matter is that i wish we could find the hidden cantos from dante which created the 10th ring of hell...

          ...right under satan's ass.

for me, that is where he belongs, for an eternity squarely beneath satan's sphincter.  no flush, no rinse, no relief.  a rather fitting end for mr deLusional, perhaps...

this is rumor control had the story yesterday, juxtaposed with a report about a Buddhist temple in Vancouver that is selling the building where it worships for Red Cross tsunami relief. The Buddhists said they don't need real estate to worship and that they were building "a temple of compassion instead". Isn't that great!
They also reported this morning that two out of five military helicopters in Sri Lanka were comandeered away from relief work by Frist and Landieu for their tsunami photo-op.
You've just got to shake your head over who has the moral high ground here.
  •  Whoa (none / 0)

Jesse Jackson Jr. refered to the same exact biblical passage in the Ohio electoral debate.  He was calling for a constitutional amendment that guaranteed the right to vote for every citizen (as opposed leaving it to the states).  He said our current system was like building a house on sand, and mentioned it was a biblical passage.
  •  Maybe unbeknownst to DeLay its the Republicans (none / 0)

They certainly spend enough time saying Lord, Lord?  But are they doing the Father's will??  This is one Christian who doesn't think so.
